Steven Universe and The Rising of the Shield Hero are like, really similar. Basically the same series, to be honest.

Isn't it weird how both series have a really weird relationship dynamic between slaves and their masters? It's quirky!

Also it sure is great how the creep character goes after children after being made very aware that they are going after children. The one dude who hits on the Steven+Connie fusion, learns their a child and is grossed out, and then is hitting on them in his next appearance and the Spear Hero are like, besties, right?

Also why is Pearl like, super super super still kind of in love with Pink Diamond/Rose? Or Spinel for that matter. Honestly kinda weird they were to begin with but that's not important. They're just like Raphtalia, and Filo, and that green hair chick whos name I can't remember but like, she willingly becomes a slave for some fucking reason. OH, reminds me of how Peridot just ? Becomes besties too. Yay. (Peridots whole arc was? Off, at least to start. So was the very very cool green hair with penguin suit character whos name doesn't really matter all that much atm.)

Steven universe was surely.. A show. It came around 2014? 2015? So I guess it was a bit stunting for the first time and was the beginning mark of an ‘unproblematic’ era. Still, even then it has its own ‘problematic’ moment like some of the ones you had listed n some more. Didn’t really appreciate how bad they were with character development n how some of them were either subtle stereotypes or stunted of good potential. I remember when they show got relentless praise n a huge fandom which died off after 2019.

most shows that aim to be unproblematic have a flourish of problematic things within or around them - it tends to be counterproductive.

I remember watching it in HS and really wanting to like it - I was really excited when Peridot was introduced. I figured she'd be the start of like, an actually interesting storyline. Halfway through her arc it became obvious it wasn't going to be anything of like, real value I guess? Which was disappointing. Her being unstable and kinda! AA! Made sense too considering her gem type - peridot is a chemically unstable gemstone. This is (usually) made worse on the surface of the earth.

I just kind of which they did better with the characters they had, and didn't go in the general direction they did. SU in theory could have been great.

If I remember correctly becoming Naofumi's slave grants you 2 buffs. One made any bit of growth gained more efficient and the other made the mastering one's abilities much faster. I believe it also allows for the sharing of exp so everyone can level up together. Combined that with the fact that Naofumi is a nice guy who doesn't treat his slaves as slaves means that there is honestly no reason not to become one. Raphtalia even chooses to get her slave crest back in season 1 even when he told her she didn't need to for show her loyalty and trust in him. The Spear Hero is a lolicon and an idiot who would believe anything a woman told him without evidence. Plus he's trying to make a harem which is funny because he got transported to the other world after getting stabbed for having 2 girlfriends.

As for Pearl she was created specifically to be Pink Diamond's servant. Her whole purpose in life was to serve her Diamond. So losing her was like losing her sole purpose. Spinel was much the same way. her sole purpose in life was to be a playmate. Which made Pink's abandonment of her hurt so much more since all she wanted to do was make her happy.

As for Peridot's arc, and the creepy guy. I don't really have an answer for you on that one. I just chalk it up to bad writing or not having enough time to writing something better.

In my opinion the show aren't similar at all outside the use of slaves but I see where you're coming from. Also sorry for the essay. Here's a follow.

From what I can see here and people's replies, it really does sound like what this show was suffering from was a lack of humility. Like "we've got these great messages to send about the LGBT+ community and self-love and stuff, and because we're on this mission to send them, we can do no wrong". Not only does acting this way enforce the notion that message > everything else, and make creators into assholes in talking with their critics, but it blinds them to any potential problems that might arise.
