NG Fests: Short Story Contest Update [Also Book Club]

Hiya! It's Kekiiro here. I want to give a brief update on the writing contest, as it ended on the 15th. I am super happy to see everyone's entries! There were a lot, 77 to be exact, which is a little bit more than I had initially expected. To be sure that every story is read thoroughly and that we aren't rushing through them, I am going to push back the initial time I had expected to be able to announce the results. Everyone put a lot of effort into these stories, and I do not want to throw that effort away because of an arbitrary deadline I gave myself and the judges.


Please be patient over the next couple of weeks while we go through and score everyone's work. I will announce the winners as soon as I can. Thank you. ^-^

Next, since I'm on the topic of reading, I'd like to bring up that I'm trying really, really hard to start up a Book Club within the NG Fests server. Moving forward with it, each month, we'll read from a selection of three books voted on in a small poll from the previous. This includes novels, comics, graphic novels, and most anything. If you're interested in the book club, please let me know.

I would love to assist in judging in future contests (at least the ones I don’t participate in). I was late to this one, but I’ve judged a bunch in the past and I’d say we did a good job lol.

I’ve looked at almost all the entries (except for a few that were hosted on sites I don’t know) and most are on the shorter side. 77 is still a ton of stories though, and there are some pretty long ones. A recommendation is to set the limit to 2-3k words, and to read them as they trickle in.

As for a book club … that sounds kinda tough. I don’t think most people would really read an entire book, especially a novel. Comics or short stories (micro/flash fiction)? Maybe. If you really wanna go the book route, I think you’d have to do a book appreciation club first, where you pick a book and try to drum up interest, and convince people to read whatever’s next.

Ahh maybe. The interest is appreciated. I've got a handful of judges right now - I just handled this in an odd manner.

If something like this is done in the future I'm likely to set the word limit to 800. I don't mind reading the longer ones but I'm also not the only judge.

Also ! I actually used to work in a library and ran a book club there - most people who tend to be interested in that can read (or listen to) a book fine within a month. They're not usually large ones anyways. It's mostly just a little thing in the fest server anyways. And a mild excuse to read a bit more. ^-^

i will patiently wait with excitement for the rescheduled stream then! although i don't care if i win or not, given i mainly used the contest as an excuse to write a prologue for the series i have planned, and to see how rusty i may have gotten in the 3 years it had been since i wrote anything this big or major (i graduated in 2020, so around that time was the last time i really wrote anything.) i wish all the 76 other contestants good luck with their stories! ^v^

No pressure at all! 77 is a lot of short stories to read through, dang! I'm excited to hear the results! I know everyone wants theirs to be a winner (I'm no exception obviously lol) but honestly it's just super exciting to participate and be considered! It was a lot of fun and everyone did such a great job! Keep us posted, but don't feel bad about needing to take your time! c:
